Question: Discuss about theHuman Development in Social Context. Answer: Week 8- Tutorial The interview questions will be asked to a housewife who is known to my family member. She is 42 years old and she spent her childhood with her two siblings. She was the oldest child of the family and was much responsible. Her responses will be discussed further. Families as Systems and Sibling Relationship The woman implied that she was born and brought up in a joint family where she lived with her parents, uncle, aunt, grandparents, siblings, and cousins. Hence, she had to be proactive in the interactive sessions with her family. The family theory concentrates on the interactive purposes with the family members. It is noted that the siblings bring the special differences to the family. Sometimes people have to deal with their temperament and sometimes the siblings are needed to be pampered. In case of the respondent, she stated that she was the oldest child in the family and she needed to take care of all her siblings. Unlike many other people, she also faced the sibling rivalry. Especially, during studies, food, and their development stages, she had to be strict with her siblings, which made her their rivals. Therefore, the relationship with the sibling is always tricky in the childhood. Socialisation of the Students by the School The middle childhood is the time when the brain of the children is developed. During such time, the children learn about the social life. Moreover, it is also noted that the cognitive skills of a child is developed at the age of six. The cognitive development takes place when the children get the chances of widening their knowledge about the social life. The respondent stated that she used to engage her younger siblings into social programmes arranged by the schools. It is true that children spend most of their times in School where they learn about the principles and take education. The supervision of the teachers becomes more important for the students. During such age, the children get the chance to know people more closely. The school teachers even need to maintain the efficiency to develop the understanding of the social life. Moreover, the friends that the children make in their school life help them in socialising with others. Peer Acceptance, Rejection, and Popularity During Childhood It is to be noted that during childhood, the peer relations and friendship become much important to the children. If the children spend a quality time with the peers, it impacts their minds and makes them more social. If the children face the peer acceptance, it enhances their self esteem. Moreover, the degree of their competence will also increase. The parents need to accept their children and need to be supportive enough towards them. On the contrary, the peer rejection creates the negative impacts on the minds of the people in the middle childhood. It is noted that rejected children often face several misbehaviours and negative treatment, which are also affecting the self-esteem of those children. The aggressiveness makes them being mistreated by people and they start underestimate the opinion of the society. It is also noted that many of the children become much popular among the society. These children are treated differently to the others. The appreciations they receive from the people make them more competent in this society. The social status of these children even improves with time. Whereas the victimize children become aggressive, the popular children stay calm and wise to deal with any situation. Development of the Self-Esteem The social events create the special impacts in the middle childhood. When the children enter to the primary schools, the teachers try to engage them in several social activities. When the children participate in these activities, it helps them in gaining experiences. It is even helpful in increasing freedom and improving their social behaviour. The children are often persuaded by the teachers and parents to show respect to others. It makes them more respectful towards people, which is necessary to develop their self-esteem. Industry vs Inferiority The view presented by Erikson is highlighting that the children between the ages of seven to eleven are much involved with the social contexts. In such time, the development of sense of industry is necessary. The activities and formal schooling practices are contributing growth to the social life of the children. Hence, the self-esteem of these children grows accordingly. On the other hand, the deprived children become incapable of acquiring such skills, which generate the sense of inferiority. It may lead these children towards interpersonal consequences and emotional turns. Hence, it is necessary to keep the focus on such development for strengthening the self-esteem. Encouragement from the Parents The drop of the confidence can create the negative impact on children. We can state that if the children become more pessimistic about their performance in the social life, it discourages them in building their self-esteem. They get the feeling of being inferior to other children who are appreciated by the society. I feel, too much expectations from the parents may discourage them, as sometimes their expectations extend beyond the capabilities. Hence, it is sometimes necessary to think of their ability and encourage them to live their life without the stress. The parents can help the children mostly by motivating and encouraging their self-esteem. They play a vital role in such regards. The more failure feedback they will receive, it will discourage them more to feel insecure. The parents are the people who can boost up their energies in failures and motivate them to improve themselves. Looking for a Friend During the middle childhood, there are many of the changes take places in a child. We believe that the friendship is mainly associated with the sharing of the different consequences and activities. In the middle childhood, the people started to identify their real friends who are going to be with them forever. We have seen that the preadolescent children between the ages of 8 to 10 usually appreciate every single thing about their friends. However, when they start growing up, they keep their circle small, as they learn to judge what is right and what is wrong. The perspectives of the children thus lead them towards identifying the friend. Differences Between the Boys and Girls Friendships Gender segregation is another much prominent feature of the early childhood. In such times, the children from middle childhood tend to make friendship with the same genders. If we analyse more, we can find that many children prefer the friend with the same mentality. In most of the cases, it is noted that boys are rough and like playing and fighting. On the other hand, girls prefer the nice talks and like to play with dolls. Hence, there are differences found in the friendships of girls and boys. Friendships in Middle Childhood and Adulthood There are many of the changes seen in the ages of middle childhood and adulthood. Similarly, the features of friendships also change during such times. As we received responses from the lady, we derive the idea that in the middle childhood, children become much interested in sharing the experiences with their friends. However, they become more introvert and responsible when they grow older. Therefore, often they like to keep their secret and they do not feel like sharing anything with every friend. They become much selective and keep their circle small. Therefore, the changes become much prominent. They become much matured that usually make them isolated from others.
